Indian Fry Bread

Indian Fry Bread

Ingredients:

18 cups flour
3 TB shortening
1-1/2 TB baking powder
1-1/2 TB salt
6 to 7 cups warm water

Directions:

Mix all ingredients, except water, together. Add water. Knead for 5 minutes. Let set for at least 2 hours. Rub shortening all over dough and cover.

Later: pinch off golf ball size balls. Rub on shortening. Heat oil until almost smoking (about 375 to 400 degrees). Drop into hot oil on both sides until almost brown.

Savory: serve with refried beans, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, salsa, tomatoes, etc.
Sweet: serve with honey and powdered sugar.
